This Thursday concert begins quietly and almost meditatively under Kaija Saariaho’s frosty winter sky in the experimental piece Ciel d’hiver. Then the winds blow eastward in Joe Hisaishi’s deep and darkly resonant Double Bass Concerto, where the symphony orchestra’s Mattias Hanskov Palm truly lets the double bass shine and fill the room with its expressive tones. Melancholic, elegant, and emotional! And an exciting, perhaps unexpected experience for those familiar with Hisaishi’s film music, often performed in concert format with orchestra.

We end the evening with Beethoven’s Eroica—a symphony that broke boundaries and forever changed the symphonic form. Its struggle, drama, and triumphant conclusion make it one of Beethoven’s most groundbreaking works!

The second movement, a mourning march, honors fallen heroes, while the finale radiates triumph. With its powerful drama, the Eroica changed the history of music and laid the foundation for the grandiose expressions of the Romantic era.
